I am very fortunate that I was able to take a few days to spend some quality time with my mom in the beautiful desert City of Scottsdale Arizona. Now that I live on the East Coast and my mom still resides in Washington State our time to together is limited so we decided to meet in the middle for some mother daughter bonding and good times.
We both love to eat and I was pleasantly surprised with the diverse and (mostly) healthy selection of food places.
Years ago vacation eating used to be an all of nothing experience where I’d come back feeling bloated and sluggish. Now I approach chowing down differently. I seek out places that serve local specialties and fresh BAS (big ass salads). There is nothing better than not having to cook and OD’ing on fresh produce and savory meats.
I know I’m not a food critic but I decided to play one on this trip. I took pictures of my food finds. Enjoy the tasty journey below.
Some of you know that I just embarked on a new business journey and opened up a smoothie and nutrition shop with my fiance Kevin. So, I was thrilled to find a cute little juice shop with freshly squeezed goodness. I tried three different juice blends guaranteed to detox the body: The Greenie, The Sublime, and Toxin Flush.
Nekter has great blends including carrot, cucumber, beet, fennel, and parsley just to name a few. They also carry smoothie bowls with house made cashew milk, fresh fruit and agave nectar. I would highly recommend this place.
We spend some time at our hotel and ate poolside. I loved the Cobb salad. It had fresh avocado, shredded chicken, bacon and cheese and was lightly tossed with a tangy lime vinaigrette. The Hilton Scottsdale Resort and Villas had a nice menu with everything from fish tacos to homemade hummus. They also made a great skinny margarita with plenty of lime and of course patron.
One night we decided to try a Mexican/Asian Fusion place called SumoMaya. The atmosphere was fun and tropical and we sampled several dished which they would bring out as soon as they were prepared.
We shared lump crab guacamole, Maya roll, crispy calamari, and Korean beef taco. Thumbs up on all of these dishes.
One afternoon we had a late lunch and tried out the Tap House Kitchen. They had a cool outdoor seating area and fun menu. I sipped on a Skinny Acai drink which had lemon, agave, rum and elderberry. It was served in a cool chilled mule mug. We snacked on their highly recommended lamb pops served with a jalapeno mint jam.
The Culinary Dropouts was a killer restaurant experience. The wait staff dressed in funky attire and the menu had eclectic combo’s such as antipasti, pork belly ramen and truffle cheddar potato chips. My mom had the chicken chili with crusty bread, garlic oil and balsamic and I had the kale and butternut squash salad. It was piled high with roasted beet, cauliflower, pomegranate toasted almond, and goat cheese. I loved it so much I didn’t even miss leaving out the chicken I normally have on a salad.
I could spend more time in Scottsdale because off the food and relaxation.
I was able to soak up the sun and chill with my mom with no stress.
I ate what I wanted and came back home refreshed and ready to kick butt working in my new store.
Have you ever been to Scottsdale or tried any of the food places I’ve mentioned?
